Gay Couple Denied Hotel Room

March 29, 2007 @ 12:30 pm

Two couples looking around for a temporary home was denied housing opportunities at the “Affordable Suites of America”, a long-term hotel located on Gion Street in Sumter because of their sexuality. The couple was inquiring about the pricing and such and was made aware by an hotel employee that it was corporate policy to not rent to gays.

So you don’t rent to gay couples?

“She wasn’t discreet about it,” said Jason Pickel, referring to a hotel employee. “She was not apologetic. She just said, ‘We do not rent to gay people.’”

A news team decided to investigate and contacted the hotel’s owner. He said that “the policy was not meant to target homosexuals.” He says they were “just trying to stop two single people from being in the same bed. “

My question is, what happens when a man wants to sleep in the same bed as his wife? Is that against coporate policy too? I went to the hotels website and the only thing it denied was pets and children. The gay couple plans to seek legal action.
