No gay marriage vote for Massachusetts

June 14, 2007 @ 1:55 pm

No gay marriage vote for MassachusettsIn a winning fight for equality, Massachusetts lawmakers blocked a proposed constitutional amendment Thursday that would have let voters decide whether to ban gay marriage in the only state that allows it. The proposed amendment threatened to undo the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s historic 2003 decision making the state the first to recognize marriage equality for same-sex couples.

“In Massachusetts today, the freedom to marry is secure,” said a victorious Gov. Deval Patrick, who had lobbied lawmakers up until the final hours Thursday to kill the measure.

Former Gov. Mitt Romney, now running for president, called the vote “a regrettable setback” and said it makes it more important now to pass a national amendment banning gay marriage. When asked, “what makes it more important?” the former Governor did not reply. President Bush also criticized the decision, but the court was adamant that only full, equal marriage rights would be constitutional.

Same sex marriage has been legalized since 2004 in Massachusetts.

Woah, I guess my message got cut off again but I was about to say:

I love my state governor. I love MA and I’m happy to see that the state will remain friendly towards gay people and same-sex marriages. Trey, don’t you wish you and Skye were up here enjoying Boston now?

    @ Melvin

Your state may approve of the gays, but only for economical reasons… The towns citizen obviously hates the gays if they are all pissed off about not being able to vote.

I dunno…Boston is a really big city and I’ve been to conventions in Boston before and there are a lot of supporters there. I guess Boston changed a little bit, but not sure. I might be visiting it sometime this summer.

Recent news, the gay marriage ban lost by 5 votes and MA remains the only state in the US to allow same-sex marriages! I’m soooooo happy. I think I might definitely take a trip to Boston and Cape Cod soon. I wish I could take you all there…it’s sooooo pretty, perfect for the summer!
