High School Principal Resigns Over Gay Student Group

High School Principal Resigns Over Gay Student GroupSome people are just too ignorant. Eddie Walker, principal at Irmo High School in South Carolina, is resigning at the end of the next school year, reports the Friendly Atheist. Walker apparently could not handle the news that the district is allowing the group to form at his school. He claims that a gay student group will cultivate and influence sexual activities.

Walker, in a letter addressed to faculty and staffs at the High School declared his reasons for resignation, which was obtained by WIS News 10 Columbia, which read:

“The formation of this club conflicts with my professional beliefs in that we do not have other clubs at Irmo High school based on sexual orientation, sexual preference, or sexual activity. In fact our sex education curriculum is abstinence based. I feel the formation of a Gay/Straight Alliance Club at Irmo High school implies that students joining the club will have chosen to or will choose to engage in sexual activity with members of the same sex, opposite sex, or members of both sexes.”

Someone needs to slap this fool in the face. Is he mixing up his religious values with “professional” belief? If I am not mistaken is it not the job of these people to instill education?

Walker said because of his “professional obligations” he will continue to serve the school until the end of the next school year.

Regardless of his “professional beliefs” however, he says “It is very important to me that the club sponsor and all students who join this club receive Golden Rule treatment from everyone.”

In its press release the District stated, “the federal Equal Access Act stipulates that if a school has permitted the formation of any non-curricular clubs, discrimination against the establishment of a new club based on its purpose and viewpoint is prohibited.
